Learning the Language of Freedom

God Set Us Free from Sin, Shame, and Condemnation

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free…” – Galatians 5:1

There’s a kind of freedom that can’t be taught in school. A kind of peace you can’t earn through effort. A kind of love you won’t find in applause, perfection, or performance.

It’s the kind of freedom God gives—a divine gift that brings peace, breaks the chains of sin, and silences shame.

But let’s be honest: for many people, this kind of freedom feels like a foreign language.

When Grace Feels Foreign

Imagine walking into a room where everyone else is fluent in a language you don’t know. They laugh, connect, respond with ease—while you feel confused and alone. Not because you don’t want to understand, but because you were never taught the language.

That’s how spiritual freedom can feel to someone raised in religion without relationship… or shame without safety. When you’ve never experienced peace or freedom from guilt, then words like “grace,” “beloved,” or “forgiven” can sound beautiful—but unreachable.

You’ve been taught a language of survival, not salvation. Of fear, not faith. Of shame, not sonship.

That’s why at Church 418, we believe in teaching a new language—the language of heaven.

Jesus Came to Set You Free—Not Just Improve You

John 8:36 says, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Jesus didn’t come to make you slightly better—He came to set you fully free. That means:

  • Free from sin’s control
  • Free from self-hate and condemnation
  • Free from shame, secrets, and silence
  • Free to love yourself as God does

But here’s the part we don’t always say out loud:

Just because the door is open doesn’t mean we know how to walk through it.

Freedom is a Language You Learn

Romans 12:2 tells us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That means freedom doesn’t just happen to you—it begins to work through you as your thinking changes.

If you grew up fluent in guilt, it may take time to learn grace.

If you were raised to believe you had to earn God’s love, you might struggle to rest in it.

But the Holy Spirit is patient, kind, and gentle—He doesn’t demand fluency overnight. He teaches, reminds, and translates truth into our hearts little by little.

Scriptures to Anchor Your Freedom

  • John 8:36 – “If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.”
  • Romans 8:1 – “There is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.”
  • Galatians 5:1 – “Stand firm… and do not be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
  • 2 Corinthians 3:17 – “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

These verses aren’t just doctrine—they’re declarations. You can speak them over your life as your new spiritual vocabulary.

Replacing the Old Language

Let’s replace some of the lies we’ve believed with the truth of freedom:

Old LanguageNew Language
“I’ll never be enough.”“God already calls me His beloved.”
“I’m too broken to be used.”“His power is made perfect in weakness.”
“I have to keep pretending.”“The truth sets me free.”
“I’m stuck forever.”“Where the Spirit is, there is freedom.”

Final Encouragement

If peace, grace, and freedom sound unfamiliar—it’s not because they’re not for you. It’s because you’re still learning the language of love.

Give yourself time.

Surround yourself with people who speak truth.

And trust that the Spirit of God is not only calling you into freedom—but teaching you how to live in it.

You are not broken. You are becoming.

You are learning the language of freedom.

Reflection Questions

  • What is one belief you’ve carried that God is asking you to unlearn?
  • How do you define freedom in your spiritual life?
  • What’s one “truth phrase” you can speak over yourself this week?
